Love these: Derwent Inktense Pencils - A Review

Art Journal Sept 2011

So, I bought a set of 24 Derwent Inktense Pencils the other week and hadn't had a chance to use them yet until a couple of days ago. I actually own another set of theirs, also Inktense but the colours are all dark earthy tones while this set was filled with beautiful vibrant colours (oh the joy!). I've always loved the other ones (the earthy ones) before, but used them more to shade and as background colours, so I never really gave them that much attention. Now, these new ones are meant for the spotlight baby! Let me tell you about them!

Creamy, vibrant, lush and pretty, are just a few words I'd use to sum up the effect of the Inktense Derwents! I was surprised by how truly 'inky' they became once I added water to my shaded bits with them. And the colour is crazy vibrant! Other watercolour pencils I've used in the past by Caran D'ache and Staedler are good too (particularly the kids' ones by Staedler -> also vibrant and creamy), but I will say that the Derwents surpass them both in quality and vibrancy. I just kept wanting to add more and more (which might be the *only* downside to them, ha ha, as wanting to add more and more can mess with your design etc).

I've also come to wonder, if they have called them "Inktense" implying a merging of the words Ink and Intense? Ie: the watercolour crayons when diluted come across as ink (truly!) and the colour is super intense (truly)! Great and appropriate name for these awesome pencils! Maybe I'm a bit 'doh' to grasp the play on words only now, but hey, I do have fog brain due to pregnancy, so do forgive a tired and worn out Tam! ;)

In any case. I highly recommend these pencils! I've loved working with them and will use them a lot more now. They will also feature prominently in my next course Life Book!

  5. I agree! Intense pencils are addictive! The great thing about them too is that when they dry, you can go over them with another layer and it doesn't wet the layer below! Now you got me wanting mine and I'm away from home right now!xx

  9. Yes, I absolutely agree with your review! I haven't used them a whole lot, but I have used them and have my own set...and the times I've used them I've loved them. Did you do that whole image in just inktense pencil or did you mix with something else? If you used just them than that is amazing to see the kind of results you can achieve and I must practice more... I am really looking forward to the life course!

  10. I totally agree with you: the colours are amazing. Inktense pencils are my favourite (have to admit that i own two sets: a small one, 12 pencils and the 24 pencilbox...)
    Love your work!!!

  11. Hi Tam. I'm already a convert on these pencils. Even if you don't add water you get a rich colour. Trouble I find is ... shall I add the water or just leave.... They are not for the fainthearted though - once that water goes on, there's no going back!! Love 'em.

  16. Weetje wat ook geweldig, je kunt ze op stof gebruiken (stof nat maken en dan tekenen/kleuren), dan met strijkbout verhitten en het komt er niet meer af!

  18. I got some of these after your post. I had a lot of fun playing with them. So far I have only used them on one small sketch, but I hope to play more in the future. I am not as daring as you, but I am inspired to use more color after seeing your pictures.

  19. I was très naughty and bought myself a tin of these... I can't wait to try them out although art time lately has been about 5 minutes a week! I have a mind to take them on holiday with me next month though, hopefully I'll get a bit more time to do some art while we're away.
